Things No One Told You About Breastfeeding – A Real & Honest Take
Breastfeeding is often described as natural and beautiful—but let’s be real, it’s also challenging, messy, and full of surprises! As a lactation massage therapist and a mom who’s been through it, I want to share some of the things no one warned me about before I started my journey. If you’re struggling, just know—you’re not alone.
1, Breastfeeding can hurt—a lot.
Yes, it’s natural, but that doesn’t mean it’s always painless. From sore nipples to engorgement, the struggle is real. But with the right techniques (and some lactation massage 😉), relief is possible!
2. Newborns nurse A LOT.
During growth spurts, you might feel like all you do is nurse. It’s exhausting, but completely normal. Hang in there, mama!
3. Some babies reject breastfeeding—and that’s okay.
It doesn’t mean you did something wrong. Babies have preferences too, and sometimes they need time to adjust.
4. Your breasts might leak—everywhere.
Milk letdowns can happen at the most unexpected times. Nursing pads will be your new best friend!
5. You’ll feel hungrier than ever.
Breastfeeding burns calories, and your body will demand extra fuel. Eat well and hydrate!
6. You may get uterine cramps while nursing.
Breastfeeding triggers contractions to help your uterus shrink back. It’s a good thing—but it can hurt!
7. Some foods and drinks can affect your baby.
Every baby reacts differently. Pay attention to what you eat and how your little one responds.
8. Breastfeeding can be stressful.
Latch issues, low supply worries, and sleep deprivation—it’s a lot. But remember, support is out there (and I’m here to help!).
9. You CAN breastfeed when you’re sick.
In fact, it helps pass antibodies to your baby, boosting their immunity.
10. Most medicines are safe while breastfeeding.
Always check with a doctor, but many medications won’t harm your baby.
11. Supplements can help with milk supply.
While a good latch and frequent nursing are key, some supplements can support your supply.
12. Boob size has nothing to do with milk production.
Big boobs, small boobs—it doesn’t matter. Your body will produce what your baby needs!
13. Listen to your body—self-care is crucial.
Breastfeeding is a journey, and taking care of yourself is just as important as taking care of your baby. Rest, eat well, and ask for help when you need it.
